This calculator uses the official Army circumference method from AR 600-9. Results are for reference only. Official measurements must be taken by a certified Army tape tester following the procedures in AR 600-9.
The Army uses a tape measurement method rather than more complex methods like DEXA or hydrostatic weighing. Measurements are taken at specific body sites and plugged into a formula to estimate body fat percentage.
For official Army testing, measurements are taken by a certified tester and the average of two measurements at each site is used.
| Age Group | Male Maximum | Female Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 17-20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21-27 | 22% | 32% |

Soldiers who achieve a score of 465 or above on the Army Fitness Test are exempt from body fat screening. This means even if your body fat percentage exceeds the AR 600-9 maximum for your age and gender, you will not be flagged if your AFT score is 465 or above.
This exemption recognizes that high physical fitness performance indicates overall fitness regardless of body composition measurements.
Check if your AFT score qualifies for exemption.
