Why Track Your AFT Scores?

Identify weak events

See which events are holding back your total score and focus your training where it matters most.

Measure real progress

Objective data beats guessing. See exactly how much you have improved since your last test.

Prepare for boards

Know your promotion point tier before board season. Track your path to 400 points.

How to Use Score Tracking to Actually Improve

A single AFT score tells you whether you passed. A series of scores tells you whether you are getting better, which event is holding you back, and whether the training you are doing is working. That is the difference tracking makes: it turns the test from a pass or fail moment into a feedback loop you can act on.

The most common mistake soldiers make is training their strongest event because it feels good, while their weakest event quietly caps their total. The AFT rewards balance. Because each event is scored 0 to 100 and the scale steepens near the top, moving your worst event from 65 to 80 points adds far more to your total than pushing your best event from 90 to 95. When you log every event separately, that imbalance becomes obvious the moment it starts, instead of surfacing on test day.

Test on a rhythm, then taper

A full practice AFT every four to six weeks is enough to measure progress without testing on tired muscles. Any more often and you are mostly measuring recovery, not fitness. In the final two weeks before a record test, stop practice testing and reduce your training volume so you arrive rested. A soldier who tapers properly routinely outscores the same soldier who trained hard through the last week and showed up fatigued.

Read the trend, not the number

When you plot several tests, the shape matters more than any single score. A total that stays flat while one event climbs almost always means another event has slipped, which is your signal to rebalance. A total that rises steadily tells you the plan is working and to keep going. A total that plateaus at the top of your range usually means the easy points are gone and further gains will come slowly, which is normal and not a reason to overhaul everything.

Track toward a specific threshold

Passing is 300 on the general standard and 350 on the combat standard, but the numbers worth training toward are often higher. A 350 total earns promotion points, and 400 earns the maximum promotion contribution from the AFT. Each of those is a concrete target you can track your distance from. Pair this tracker with the AFT calculator to convert raw reps and times into points, and the promotion points calculator to see which tier your current total lands in. When you know your weakest event and your target, the training guide breaks down how to close the gap event by event.
