Age coverage: this calculator covers the 17-21 through 37-41 age brackets. The full APFT scale extended through 62 and above. We only publish brackets we can source from an official scoring chart rather than estimating the rest, so older brackets are not offered.
How APFT Scoring Worked
Each of the three events scored 0 to 100 points, giving a maximum total of 300. Scoring was normed by age group, and push-ups and the run were additionally normed by sex. Sit-ups used a single scale for everyone.
| Event | Format | Scoring |
|---|---|---|
| Push-Ups | Maximum repetitions in 2 minutes | Separate male and female scales. Higher reps score higher. |
| Sit-Ups | Maximum repetitions in 2 minutes | One scale for all soldiers. Higher reps score higher. |
| Two-Mile Run | Timed run over a measured flat course | Separate male and female scales. Lower time scores higher. |
What Was a Passing APFT Score?
A soldier needed 60 points on every event. There was no separate total-score minimum, so the lowest possible passing total was 180 out of 300. The per-event rule was strict: scoring 59 on one event failed the whole test even with 100s on the other two.
A separate 50-point per-event threshold applied to graduating Basic Combat Training. The scoring scale itself was identical; only the pass mark differed. This calculator reports against the 60-point standard and tells you when a score would have cleared the BCT threshold but not the regular one.
Informally, 270 or above (averaging 90 per event) was considered a strong score, and a perfect 300 required maxing all three events.
APFT, ACFT, and AFT: What Replaced What
The Army has changed its fitness test twice in five years. Here is where the APFT sits in that sequence.
| Test | In use | Events | Max score |
|---|---|---|---|
| APFT | 1980 to 2020 | 3 | 300 points |
| ACFT | 2020 to 2025 | 6 | 600 points |
| AFT | 2025 to present | 5 | 500 points |
The AFT kept the two-mile run from the APFT era and dropped sit-ups entirely, replacing them with the plank. For a full breakdown of the current test, see our guide to the 5 AFT events or the current AFT standards.
